Coach/Carriage Bolts - best way to remove rusty ones?

Hi,

The latest 3 machines I have purchased ALL have rusted on coach/carriage bolts that just turn the nut and bolt together when forced.

With nothing to grip, how can I remove them.  I've tried penetrating fluid, no joy

I'm thinking of masking over the bolts and drilling into them. Is that what you guys do?

I have similar with old leaf buttons, just wedged on with rusty bolts, spinning in their sockets, damn annoying.

you could ether try cutting the nut/bolt or tapping the head. I am no master at that by any means though.

what kind of access do you have to them ( photo ) ? as im not familiar with them by name

 if you have exposed threads, you can try double nuts on them, tightening the new nut against the frozen one, then use that nut to hold the bolt from turning, then with another wrench, try to tighten the old nut, breaking it free on the threads...

I'll put photos up, access is real crappy, smooth surface on bolt on CPO side, under side rusty nuts embedded in recess in the control panel wood.

if you have a dremel or something you could try to cut the nut off.

wow, those are some serious messed up bolts... the design wasn't intended for longevity

if all the carriage bolt heads are exposed on the topside of the control panel would find a slightly undersized drill bit and drill the top head off of each bolt, then knock them thru with a punch & hammer

if you have access to using a drill press it would make it easy

I don't have access to one, I know what you mean, that would be awesome.

I'll get the old trusty drill bit out.
