What are some methods that you guys have used to clean up buttons excluding buying new ones.

Soap and water soak, something more strong like Mean Green or even stronger like an alcohol or something. I was thinking of tossing them in the dishwasher?

I take the buttons completely apart and then soak all the parts in a glass filled with water and bleach or water and simple green. Let them soak for a few hours or more.

on leaf buttons, I usually wash them and then chuck the parts into a cordless drill on low speed and polish them with 2000 grit sandpaper followed by plastic polish, they look like new after.
On Micros it's usually the same thing, except I do the sanding and polish manually since there is no easy way to chuck them in a drill.

If anything is discolored or gouged deep, I just replace.

True restoration is an art form. Like any good artist you have to know what your doing. Painting a single line on a canvas and calling it a masterpiece does not fly in restoring a arcade machine. Do it right
