I'm getting a blue screen whilst trying to play one side of a vs board.  Decided to look at the romset and nothing matches, apart from 2b.  Here are the CRCs

1a = e2902b4e
1b = fbc53465
1c = 6ae01102
1d = f58a392e
2a = 001e8e0b
2b = 80be1f50 - this verifies as (excitebk,Vs. Excitebike,mds-eb4.2b)

Looks like I am not alone:

This guy has the same roms as me apart from 1b and 2a.  Any ideas what is going on here?

It's entirely possible you have a different revision that is not in MAME. I'd just reburn a new set using the MAME roms. If you want to save the version you have don't erase it and use some new eproms.

Ok thanks John.  I've backed up the old roms.  Will now erase and program with the Mame roms.

Cheers

Yeah, no biggie. I have had this happen to me before. You might want to try running your roms through ROMIDENT to see if they get identified as Excitebike.

Rom ident only identifies 1 rom.

I'm still getting the blue screen even though I have burnt new roms from mame.

So....a CPU issue or a PPU issue :-(  My original roms may be ok?

i'd try another CPU if you have one. It's worth a shot.

Yup, will swap the CPUs over tonight, and see what happens!

I hope it is not the PPU because it cost me quite a bit to get it from the US and I don't have another!

I have had the blue screen a lot and usually trying a different PPU or reseating things helps. But, it could also be anything else too! Who knows!

John, do you know if RP2A03E CPU's are ok as replacements instead of RP2A03A's?

Sweet! BTW - I meant to say CPU issue above, not PPU.

I bet that CPU will work on another board if you try. I have had a lot of weird things with CPUs not liking some games and boards.

I was premature here.  I still have issues :-(

I swaped out what I thought was the bad CPU for an RP2A03E on Excite bike and put the RP2A03A CPU on Super Mario

Excite Bike worked!  Super Mario has a yellow screen!?!?!  Also I noticed the game was resetting!

So I wondered if the CPU's needed to match, so I swaped the known working RP2A03A for the RP2A03E - so both CPUs on the PCB
were RP2A03E

Powered up and both games were working, but....game resetting, and noticed that even though Super Mario was working initially, it had gone to a black screen after a short period of time.  Powered off and back on - Super Mario had a yellow screen again!

Put my other PCB back in with Hogans Alley and Golf and no resetting.

So either my second PCB (with Super Mario and Excite Bike) is screwed - which accounts for the resetting.....or it doesn't like the CPU's

So I could do with taking the CPU's off the non-resetting board to see if it works and doesn't reset - If this is the case it doesn't like the RP2A03E CPUS.  If it is the same the PCB is faulty :-(

Swapped around the CPU's and PPU's and no change, so decided to burn a new rom set, and guess what....

Yup, both screens now have games!

The only weird thing I don't understand is that Super Mario is meant to be in freeplay, I've burned the replacement 1d/6d rom for free play and attract, but I cannot start a game.  I've made sure the 1-3 dips are set to on, so I'm not sure why this is the case

I've tried pressing P1, and P2 buttons...nothing

I've tested this is mame with the mod, and it just requires the P1, or P2 start button to be pressed.  Maybe I have button issues?

Mario is working now.  I had to change some of the wiring over from the gun harness back to the CP.  I can credit the game now  Smiley

What I don't quite understand is why the Vs Gun connects to the right joystick which renders the select buttons redundant - hence why I had my problem

If you ever wanted to change the game, from a gun game, your stuck as the select buttons don't function.

Why did they not replace the left joystick and leave the right joystick and select buttons to function, to make game interchanging easier, even if the gun is on the control panel?
