Hello Friends, I am having some video issues during gameplay on my Tempest. Text looks fine, but when I actually begin a game the spaceship is jumping all over the screen and the grids don't even show up. I uploaded a video of my Tempest to YouTube so you can see what it's doing. Here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLHllGxESigYour assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Put the game in test mode. Follow the instructions in the manual to see if it reports anything.

Good news I got it working again. I did a few things, but I think the real cultprits were the edge connections on the smaller pcb. They were full of crud. I cleaned them off and then used solder to make them nice and clean. I also reseated a few chips. I resoldered the pins on the interboard connectors and checked continuity between boards to ensure all was well. Finally I noticed some A/C in the D/C line so I replace the big blue capacitor in the power supply. I suspect that is what was causing instability (wiggle) in the graphics on the screen. As you can see from the video below it's playing great and looks great. Crisis Averted! http://youtu.be/Ng3P2i_x4u8

I can fix it by reseating the edge connector.

Bob Roberts is (or was ) selling an edge connector repair kit that completly replaced the edge connector on some of the Midway boards. I used this kit to repair my Ms. Pacman board that I've been working on. While I'm sure that Tempest is a completly differant board/edge connector I wonder if this kit or another similar kit would help. So the question is does anyone make or sell a kit that would work on a Tempest board.

for starters, the edge connector is plated with HARD gold or some other hard metal. This allows it to not oxidize and make good electrical connection. While the connections can get dirty over time a cleaning is usually sufficient to restore proper operation. If the edge connector pins have gold on them and you add solder you will create a really shitty alloy that will oxidize, crack, and generally be really shitty.
The second reason is, if your connection is poor because of a loose connector and you think adding solder will help because it gives it more 'bite', its only a temporary fix. The connector will still become loose over time, possible quicker than before.
If your connector is loose, repin/replace it. If the pins are dirty, clean them. if they are damaged, repair them, or find another way onto the board.

Makes sense. In my defense I was primarily cleaning off old solder that was already on there. I'll rebuild that connector soon. Thanks.
