Any suggestions for my Gyruss

Hi everyone,

I acquired a Gyruss cabinet this weekend (posted in the general discussion here: http://www.johnsarcade.com/forum/index.php?topic=1680.0)

Ok - so does anyone have any idea why the game will display the score, level, # of lives, high score, etc, but not the actual game play (see video for details on that)?

Also, when I do get the cabinet to boot up successfully, it'll usually reboot after a minute or two.

If you look at those last two picutures in the imgur album I linked, you'll see some metal shielding that was rattling around in the cabinet unsecured - I'm assuming that is supposed to be covering the system board - is that right?

If anyone can tell me anything interesting, helpful, etc about this cabinet I'd appreciate it. 

I have JUST started watching John's Gyruss videos - hopefully I'll see something there that'll help me as I go through with my restore...

First things first...

Did you check your voltages?!!? You gotta do this first. Test that power supply. Are you getting +5, 12V, etc.?

Not yet - so far all I've done is drill the locks, vacuum up the metal shavings, and make sure all the cables were snugly plugged in.  I'll check the voltages on Monday evening when I get home from work.  Thanks!

Ok just checked my voltages and here's what I found

+5v = 5.16
+12v = 12.41

I also checked the -5v and only registered a -4.95 - and that didn't change if I adjusted the 5v dial.

I'm thinking I need to pull the PCB and make sure all the chips are seated properly - Am I thinking right?  Or does anyone have any other suggestion?

that is almost certainly eprom issues. Reseat eproms, maybe try to find someone near you with an eprom burner to test them. Visually inspect the board for cut traces (though keep in mind some cuts may be intentional).

Ok, so new results.  I decided to test the power supply again and all of the sudden, the +5v is only putting out 4.5 at the most - that's with the +5v dial cranked. Also, when I checked the terminals that the AC is hooked to, I'm only getting a reading of 101.

I was also curious about this RFI Power line filter: http://i.imgur.com/p8TgvUf.jpg  I tested the voltages on both the Line and the Load side, and I'm getting readings of 117.9.
Also, just below the "line" side, there are two fuse blocks, but one does not have a fuse in it - see here: http://i.imgur.com/MxcITav.jpg - is this right/ok?

So, would you think this would be a bad power supply, or do I have a problem *before* the AC reaches the power supply?

I don't think ac will be an issue. Your power supply might be marginal. Might be worth trying a new supply.

I ended up having to go with a switcher in my gyruss..
I was getting a pretty bad soak while the game was on my voltages would just drop .
