Whatever the revenue is from YouTube surely doesn't come even close to covering the hosting and other costs. 

My 12yo son noticed I spent a lot of time watching John's videos and listening to his podcasts and asked how John makes money. I told him that he doesn't and John just loves the hobby and the community.  John just does things from his heart.

This is true. I've never made a profit doing this once you figure in paying for webhosting and mp3 file hosting for ten years.
