"Boomshakala!" ...?

Okay, so this was actually the first arcade machine that I personally ever owned.

When I got it, I was young.. and didn't know (or care) that it wasn't original. At the time, I was just awestruck that I actually owned an arcade machine.

So I'm MUCH older now..and my arcade is starting to grow (see my "Introduce myself post" @ http://www.johnsarcade.com/forum/index.php?topic=1121.0)

I now realize that this was an original Asteroids cabinet, that an operator had converted to a Gyruss back in the 80s/90s...and I'm wondering what in the heck I should do with it now.

Check out a quick video I took of the machine here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_UnGaeL628

If I use the cabinet, and convert it back to an original Asteroids... that's a lot of work. I would need to pick up a new XY monitor, CP(O), PCBs, etc.

If I use the "guts," and convert it to a Gyruss.. I've either A) got to find a Gyruss cab.. or build one myself (of which I lack a lot of the necessary woodworking tools to embark on this endeavor).

...or I could part it out.. keep what I want, and sell the rest.

...or I could just leave it as is.

Thoughts?

When something like that is converted you can do whatever you want. Asteroids isn't rare in any since. Of you had a rare game cabinet then I would say restore it.

Another option...

After some poking around, it looks like Lunar lander is another Atari game that shares the same cabinet type? ...but not sure that would bring the desired "fun factor" to the arcade.

Well, I think I would leave it as is unless you stumble across a cheap Asteroids or Asteroids Deluxe with a bad cab.
The reason I say that is the conversion looks pretty well done, and the side art kind of fits the Gyruss theme so it doesn't look strange.

Lunar Lander is cool but the parts are expensive.

also I want to point out that MANY MANY of these conversions are bootleg and it is very likely that yours is as well. I would think about trying to make it into something else that you would enjoy. Gyruss and asteroids are very common and not worth creating from nothing.

If you look at the video you can clearly see it is a centuri conversion kit.

So it sounds like the general consensus is to leave as-is...

Honestly, that's kind of what I was thinking...However, yes, I'll definitely keep my eyes out for a working asteroids with a crappy cab... Or for that matter, a good looking Gyruss with a a crap monitor or pcbs.

Appreciate the feedback! Cheesy

It actually looks pretty nice, I wouldn't bother if you like the game.

Yeah, I suppose I'm cool with it for now...my son likes it more. ;)

...it is loud as hell though (and the volume pot is turned as low as possible), so that will be a small little project to fix Smiley

Update: VR2 POT is crap and I should probably replace it. Nothing.. nothing.. nothing.. LOUD... LOUDER... OMG COVER YOUR EARS.
