Dragon Warrior IV is my favorite 80's RPG.  Suikoden is my all time favorite RPG series but it started in 1995 I think.

Star Control 2 is an epic game! Never really considered it a RPG, You can play it on PC and android now as the source code was released open source, but they Fred Ford and Paul had to change the name to Ur-Quan Masters because they sold the name.

Also, my favorite RPGs back then were:
Sword of Vermilion (Genesis - by Yu Suzuki)
Luna the silver Star (Sega CD)
Phantasy Star (master system)
Super Mario RPG
Shadow Gate
Earthbound

I beat that game so much that if I ever played it again, I won't need the maps and guide for the game.
