Re-seat the board, it's shaped like an "L".  You can clean the male edge connector with a pencil eraser carefully.check your voltages, and re-seat the few chips that are socketed. Should get it going, not much to go wrong with it.

It allowed you to try games before you bought them, kind of a marketing ploy by Nintendo.

I haven't messed around much with free play on mine, I just put a credit switch behind the reject button on the coin door. I'm glad it worked out for you. I will try putting mine on free play and see what happens, sometimes you have to have certain switches on or off for free play to work or it goes into a boot cycle.

Dirty ram/roms, black tarnish accumulates on the legs of the chips and causes a lot of issues with mine, buy a can of tuner cleaner from RadioShack and remove the chips one by one and clean them.

Every one I've seen has the holes, just not the brackets. Look between the monitor and the lower board under it and there should be a bracket or holes for the bracket, then up by the back door there should be 2 bolts close together or holes close together. That's where the cross brace for the top of the monitor to mount.

You are right on. That is exactly how it is.
Good , now all you have to do is make the brackets. They are pretty basic, a little angle iron and a little time and you can have a functional set or find some on ebay.

It's in the service switches it says cabinet style upright one control. Hold the service switch and power on the game toggle through the menu with the service and s1 and s2 switches and use the joystick and buttons to make changes. Or use dip switch 4 to go into setup and do the same thing.
