1  Arcade and Pinball Discussions / Beginner's Help Corner / Re: Garbled screen help-1980 Sega Gremlin space firebird on: September 15, 2017, 07:43:02 pm
It sounds like there is an issue with a component or components on the board. You checked the basics well. Time to get a little more advanced. Usually people test a cabinet by swapping out the game for another one that is known working, although I know that can be tough.
2  Arcade and Pinball Discussions / Beginner's Help Corner / Re: Volume question (1989 ninja turtle standup$ on: September 15, 2017, 07:41:17 pm
Yes, there is a volume control potentiometer, commonly called a "pot". It is usually white, sometimes with a shape on it that would allow a screwdriver or tool to adjust it. Most of them are round and flat and simply have to be moved carefully with your fingers to rotate. Turning it to the right will usually turn the volume up.

There are generally video chips to check on a PCB and of course the traces that run to them. I think you are more technical with these than I am, but you should be getting video signal to the edge connector. So I would think you could start at the edge connector and follow the lines backwards from there to where the video is coming from on the board. Does that make sense? Hope that helps, and hope you get it fixed, and HOPE YOU UPDATE US!  Grin

5  Tech and Marketplace / I need help with my game! - Technical Discussion / Re: Neo geo single to standard jamma on: September 15, 2017, 07:35:05 pm
Friend who runs a laundry mat has a single slot neo geo motherboard that died. He wants to put a multicade in it since he has a dual slot neo geo also. Everything works fine, (neo geo harness was suppose to match standard jamma) but we couldn't get it to coin up. I found the coin mechs are a separate plug on the old mother board. Is that right?

Anyone have an easy fix? Don't have any idea how to wire in extra wires to an existing harness and really don't want to rebuild a new harness from scratch. Sorry, I'm a noob at how the wires fit into the harness...

Having coin mechs connected to the motherboard is unusual. They should go through the Jamma wiring harness. This will make it difficult to swap to another PCB, which is the whole reason of having a Jamma type cabinet. Getting this fixed in terms of wiring it back up to the harness should be on the easy side for someone who knows what they are doing. If wiring is hard for you, I'm afraid it is too involved for you. BUT, finding someone who can help you to get this done should be easy. This is pretty basic for someone who does electronics. You can find out where the coin mech wires go on the Jamma connector by googling "jamma wiring". Good luck.
6  Tech and Marketplace / I need help with my game! - Technical Discussion / Re: Help me please to identify this joystick and buttons on: September 15, 2017, 07:31:13 pm
The major difference is the hole in the bottom of the joystick from many standard joysticks. While so difficult to identify, you can check on Paradise Arcade and others for the same kind of joystick, you can get the measurements online and compare them to the stick. Basically, reproducing such a stick should be straightforward. Drilling a hole there is able to be done with basic tools. Hope that helps.

Ok so yesterday I went on my first game pickup for a Galaxian cocktail and heres what I came home with.
https://flic.kr/s/aHsm1aNk49
Talk about original unmolested. I cant see any wiring mods replaced caps or anything. The underlay on the glass has seen better days and there are a few nicks on the cab but other than that its in really good shape. The CPOs look perfect and the board is super clean. So far the only thing Ive found wrong with it is that the AC line filter is dead and wont let voltage pass through. Tell me what you guys think! How necessary is it to keep the line filter in there? Should I do the DC power mod on the PCB and use a switcher or keep the transformers? Ill be doing a cap kit on the PCB and G07 chassis as preventative maintenance so let me know some other things i should do while Im capping stuff.

My understanding is that you should simply replace the AC line filter. If you don't have money or don't care about other things being affected through the power lines, then you can go without.

Probably fixing it the way it was originally done is the better way to go. You can check for any other issues visually and even reflow some stuff according to John's advice on his videos. I hope to see an update and success!

This is pretty interesting. Has any example been produced? This is technical info heavy. To gain interest from the public a title must be at least a work in progress with something to show.

It's tough to know across the country. Why not look into auctions? Maybe you can even get a hint there. And share with us!
