i agree, if all is good id say the game board. Why would you mame such a nice original machine? you would def need more buttons and a new joystick. that would destroy the CP. i wouldn't do it!

if you tap the cabinet hard and it happens check for connections, if it only happens when you have lots of characters on the screen id say its a processing problem on your game pcb

i wouldnt touch the game pcb color pots, those are factory set, id recap the monitor, those can and will be bad without any physical signs. there are two sets of color adjustments, one on the inverter board (if you have one) where the rainbow cable plugs in and the pots on the neckboard.
i wouldnt touch the game board post unless you got a good picture using another board.

id say the audio pre amp section of your board needs to be recapped, im not sure which section that is but im sure thats your issue.

Good advice on the plywood cab, it is much more durable, i've seen my share of particle board cabs crumbling away! what a waste!

never had a chance to dive deep in vs as a kid. but my faves now are SMB and goonies. Maybe when i get my DR. Mario in that will be my new fave! 

That 4 slot is worth more, i think.
i picked up a one slot in a trashed/ vandalized cab for a STEAL
it came with the OG snk harness, a aftermarket CPO in NOS condition and the PCB was like new, even had the credit counters inside never mounted, best part i got 2 free games, he only had fatal fury and samurai showdown though
