Arcade and Pinball Discussions / General Pinball Discussions / Coin Mech Question
|

Hey Guys, Here's the . I'm building a virtual mini pin. I know I know. It's not real pinball. I've got kids and it seemed like a fun project. I've got a cabinet. I've ordered moniters. My question is about going with a fake coin mech or a real one? I dont know if the virtual pins can even use a real mech. I guess it comes down to wether the software will work with a real mech or not. Anyone have any experience with this? If not than I just order a fake coin door to fit and never use it. I've always liked the idea of having games on coin play but if it's not possible, than it is what it is. Thanks for any advice here.

LOL! "This machine was played by Steve Wiebe himself!" Actually, that's true. That machine was at Richie Knucklez's tournament at his arcade in New Jersey during the Kong Off. I know, cause I was there. Steve Weibe did play on that DK and Richie sold it. That was the machine in the tournament. Sadly, that CL ad was made to make fun of KLOV member Kaneda. He didn't post his games for sale but someone made that fictitious listing. Ahh. I see. I went back and read the thread on klov. Man, some of the guys on that site can be pretty brutal. It's too bad.

Arcade and Pinball Discussions / General Pinball Discussions / Going to start looking for a NBA Fastbreak.

I would like to add a few games to my basement and I think I've made up my mind. After watching one of John's old pin reviews, I've decided on nbafb. I've yet to play one but the game looks awesome! And the theme is fine for me as I love basketball. Espically the whole 90's era. Add the fact that I think I could probably get one for under 2 grand, I think I've found a winner. I've been on a hiatus from work for a bit but I'm going back to the show next week. I won't really have the funds for one probably a month. But that will give me some time to do some research. I also just moved so I'm in the process of setting up a new workspace, so that will keep me tied up for a bit. So why am I here? Well, I was just looking for any info you guys can give on the title. Maybe what I should actually be paying for one. Is there anything to look for when buying? Do they have a quirks to be aware of? Any parts I should be keeping my eye out for that I will most likely be needing that only pop up here and there? Really looking forward to this one. Johns video was pretty inspiring. I think I would like to get my hands on an NBA Jam too if the price is right. I think they would look nice next to each other. I've already been looking at nbafb posts on pinside but I don't want to put it out there on their forum seeing how I don't have the funds in hand yet. Any advice/info is appreciated guys. And if anyone is looking to sell theirs in a month or so, maybe we can strike a . Thanks guys.

Arcade and Pinball Discussions / General Arcade and Video Game Discussions / Transformer clean up/repair

Hey guys, I've got a transformer on an 84 space shuttle that needs some help. Waiting on some parts so I thought I would get the inside of the cabinet cleaned out. As I was cleaning I started taking a good look at the transformer and I'm now afraid to even power the machine up with this thing.
To start with, someone cut the connector off the end of the dozen or so wires coming off it. And the top metal band on the thing is pretty rusted. There's tons of dirt and grime all over it too.
Anyways, has anyone ever gone through one of these and basically got it looking and working like now? If so, what was your process? I would like to throw up a pic but I'm not sure how to do it on these forums. Trust me, this thing looks nasty! And I'm guessing I'll just have to find out what kind of connector goes on there, order one up and do some labor getting the wires back in place.
Also, I've heard these things almost never go bad, and I saw some online for over $100 so I'm not really keen on buying a new one. Especially after dishing out $250 for a new mpu for this machine.
Any help is appreciated guys. I've never worked on one before, so I'm going in this blind.

Thanks John. That's exactly what I was looking for. Kind of surprises me the big forums don't have a list. All the better since I think I'm going to be spending more time here anyways.
Here's a few on my list. Can't say that I've ordered from every one of them but I heard good things about them all.
Bayareaamusements.com Pinballlife.com Littleshopofgames.com Pinballdecals.com Pinballspareparts.com Planetary pinball.com Marcospecialties.com Arcadeshop.com Mouser.com
Don't feel like you need to add these, just wanted to throw them out there.

Arcade and Pinball Discussions / General Arcade and Video Game Discussions / Arcade and pinball Resources. Is there a list?
|

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone has come across a list of arcade or pinball resources? I would imagine there is probably one on pinside or klov but I've never come across one. And by resources, I'm talking mainly parts.
I've been on sites where they have links to other great pages, but it would be so nice to just have a list with them all together. So say I am looking for arcade parts, I can just check the list and start going to the sites to find my part.
I am still pretty new to the restoring end of the hobby, so what usually happens for me is I just start googling and checking random sites till I find what I need.
If someone knows of a list already on rgp, klov, pinside ect.... Can you maybe post a link? I don't frequent klov mainly cause I'm usually on pinside.
Thanks guys for any help. I would say lets just start a list here but I'm assuming that would just turn into a big long thread that wouldn't be very easy to navigate.
Thanks for any help here.

John's Right. Rule set is huge. Especially if it's going to be something in your home.
I grew up playing arcade and pinball games in the 80's and early 90's. I always played more arcade games but that was because there were more of them. When I played pinball, I can't honestly say that I knew the rule set on any game back then. Actually, there was one. It was white water and that was only cause it was the pin I played the most.
So now, as I've got back into the hobby, I'm starting to see what all these games were actually about. Each one has a different strategy. I would say the 90's pins are my personal favorites. Lots of depth, tons of modes, multiple multiballs, and in general, most of the games were non licensed games.
That's my problem with Stern these days. Every pin they have released in the last 13 years is a licensed game. I think original themes are better. Granted they require the designer to be a bit more creative, I think they have more staying power than a CSI, or a 24 pin.
And the way Stern prices their games these days, I think it's getting a bit ridiculous. They love to blame price on the fact that they have to pay for licenses. Well, I say get some better designers and do an original theme. And quit trying to rip us off with all these different models. Pro, Premium, Limited Edition, green hulk edition, Magneto edition ect...... They take a complete game, which they should be charging whatever, $6000 , $6500 for nib. We'll, then they strip off the toys, some modes, sometimes part of the playfield (ac/dc), artwork ect... And then they call that the Pro. We'll, if you want the complete game, you need to pay another $2000. And they call that the premium, or limited edition. It's Retarted. And then you can wait for a couple of years to see if they are ever going to finish the code on the game you paid $8500 for. Fuck you Stern. And it looks like they have even gave up on finishing code on some of their games. Looking forward to the new Mustang pin? I don't think so stern.
And yes, I know, you can say JJP charges the same. Well, your right. But I also think they are making a better product. Sterns new Star Trek could have been built literally 15 years ago. They finally decided to change it up and go all led's. And clear inserts, which they copied off of JJP. Anyways, they are still using a dmd, a fan layout, nothing innovative. JJP's first pin had all color changing led's, and LCD display, (which it looks like sterns mustang will still be using a dmd) clear inserts, 2 raised play fields, wide body, tons of toys, and some innovative out lane games. And from what I understand, the first release of WoZ, they were sold for $6500!
I know, I know, I sound like I have a hard on for JJP. Well, it's not that. I'm just glad there is some competition for the same old stern. And I am also excited to hear that ther new pin will be an original design.
Ok, what was this post about? Sorry, I got a bit off track.
Yeah, pinball is fun.

Well, I ended up with pins. I got an older em. It's a 72 williams honey. And i recently picked up an 84 williams space shuttle. Got it for $150 off a scrapper. I don't think he knew what he had. It's defiantly in rough shape but I'm looking forward to the restore. Just got an mpu for it. It didn't have one. And probably going to go with a CPR playfield. Still got to track down a backglass but I I've got a lot of work ahead of me before I need to worry about that. Just gonna keep my eyes open on eBay, craigslist, pinside ect....
Sorry, I didn't post earlier. Didn't realize some people were interested in seeing what I ended up with.

Thanks for the advice John. I did end up getting a cabinet. But it is a pin. I know you guys aren't that into them but it's been a pretty fun one to tinker with. Just getting ready to take apart the playfield and do some major cleaning.
One other question for you. I know you do have 3 pins right now. Do you have a preferred place you seek out your pins? I guess this question would work for arcade games too. I'm basically wading through the overpriced stuff on craigslist daily looking for deals. I occasionally check eBay and pinside, but there usually aren't too many deals to be found.
Loved the live show you guys did at grinkers! Keep up the great work on the podcast. Been listening to every episode.

Hey guys. New to the game. Looking for broken stuff to work on. I'm more into classics rather than the newer stuff. I'm still looking for my first machine. Is there anything crazy I should stay away from? I'm trying to find a reference for game values so I don't end up paying too much for broken stuff that's not worth it after its fixed up. Any suggestions? Almost picked up a Capcom bowling for $150 bit my heart tells me that's too much. Anyways, any tips would be apprecated. I'm new just getting into this. I enjoyed the last episode of the show. Wish I could make it to the meet up. Thanks in advance.
And one other thing. Frogger for $150 not working. Is that too much?
