1  Arcade and Pinball Discussions / General Arcade and Video Game Discussions / Arcade Tournament Questions on: July 13, 2017, 07:37:06 pm
Hey there-

So I have a barcade in NC and we want to start tournaments done in the same vein as Brofest. Just wondering a) what kind of software or app was being used by the ref, and b) how the leaderboard is posted to a TV screen?

Thanks!
2  Tech and Marketplace / I need help with my game! - Technical Discussion / MK1 Sound issues on: March 23, 2016, 10:22:55 am
Hi! I have an MK1 that is having a sound issue- there were no cables between the sound board and the pcb so I had to make my own. Now that it's hooked up I can hear a single tone when the game starts up, the sound pot works fine,  and there is a single tone when I test the board in diagnostics, it says the sound board tests okay, however there isn't any audio for the game at all. Can someone help me trouble shoot what is going on?
3  Arcade and Pinball Discussions / General Arcade and Video Game Discussions / Best arcade score for me yet. on: September 13, 2015, 05:51:17 pm
I don't normally post my arcade finds here but this one was too good to be true.

I had turned off all my 'arcade finder' notifications a few weeks ago because I was full up on games and out of $$.

But then a buddy who was buying a pinball off of Craigslist texts me and asks if I wanted a Space Invaders/Qix 15th Anniversary Silver Edition. There are no photos, but it works and it's priced so low that I can't say no, and he says he'll bring it to me.

When it arrives, I'm am completely floored by it's condition: One owner, HUO, bought direct from distributor, and it's in near mint condition. There was still factory film on some of the chrome. There was also a bag of leg levelers unopened, and as I opened the bag my buddy asked to have 'a whiff of that namco factory air'. Haha.

Total cost: $200, delivered.

I guess sometimes when you are not looking for the games, the games are looking for you!

Have you got pics of what you have done so far?

I got one crappy pic I took with my crappy phone camera--  all I've done so far is change out the marquee, control panel and I've put in a working boardset. I'm looking for a scan of the side art now so I can make it perty.

But then it won't be original.

That seems silly

Why is that silly? It's the same cabinet.  Championship Sprint was sold as a kit to use in Paperboy cabinets-- some were sold in the generic System II cabs, Paperboys are still being sold in the generic System II cabinets as well. I already having a working Championship Sprint and had an extra CS cab with a missing boardset that I used to make the Paperboy. And the parts are being sold to somebody who wants to complete their own Championship Sprint, so I don't see what the problem is-- I'm getting a paperboy- and that's freakin awesome.

I'm working on taking a Championship Sprint cabinet I have and turning it into a Paperboy-- it's nearly complete but I am wondering if anyone can tell where to find some info on how to change a Championship Sprint wiring harness to work with a Paperboy control panel?

Thanks!

Thanks for the help Ian. I'm learning a lot!

I don't have a logic probe but have just ordered one to test it this week. I also have contacted somebody who can burn afterburner eproms-- I'm assuming taking the gamble and just buying a replacement eprom might ultimately solve the problem?

And just to clarify, forgive my ignorance but I'm unsure which chip is the Z80- are you saying the Eprom is the z80 or is that a different chip altogether? If so which one would it be? I can't seem to determine it on my own.

the sound issue is probably coming from the main board. I can't find schematics that are readable but what I did find shows a few ares of interest.
There is a yamaha sound chip as well as a DAC chip that are worth looking at. Also there are opamps that with prebuffering the sound before it goes to the audio board.

So according to the manual these are the 4 chips responsible for sound (24, 25, 26, 27) 24 is for sound program and the rest are for "Sound Dater"

which are these chips,  24 is the chip labeled EPR and the rest are the 3 below it.

How would I test these chips? And where would I find replacements should any of these chips prove to be bad?
9  Tech and Marketplace / I need help with my game! - Technical Discussion / Afterburner sound and control issues on: June 13, 2015, 11:57:30 am
I have an Afterburner with 2 different issues I'm trying to solve.

1. Currently there is no sound.  I have tested the speakers and they are working, I had a sound board from an Outrun that is functioning and switched it out, still nothing.  Where else could the problem be coming from?

2. I currently am not getting anything action from the missile button.  I took it apart and found the tiny button switch mounted to a pcb. Is there a way for me to test the switch? If it's broken I can't seem to find a replacement for that part online and am wondering if there is a way to fix it. If it's possible that the issue could be coming from elsewhere, where should I be looking?

Thanks!
10  Arcade and Pinball Discussions / General Arcade and Video Game Discussions / Identify this cabinet? on: May 22, 2015, 05:00:50 pm
Wondering what cabinet this might be... I couldn't find a match in Ian Kellog's cabinet identification chart. also, this Smash TV marquis looks nothing like the original--- is this a cheap knockoff?

14  Tech and Marketplace / I need help with my game! - Technical Discussion / Can somebody identify this connector from Sega After Burner? on: May 06, 2015, 08:54:25 pm
I have a photo of the connector here: http://imgur.com/LtVOLKc

It's a 20 pin connector off of a Sega After Burner, one of the wires broke off right at the pin inside the connector and it looks like my best bet is to just replace it.

Could somebody tell me where I can order this style connector, and if it requires a specific tool to put the wires in?

Thanks!

15  Tech and Marketplace / I need help with my game! - Technical Discussion / Re: Can anyone w/ a Williams System 6 pin take a look at their AC varistor for me? on: May 06, 2015, 08:47:32 pm
Okay, then its going to be a standard AC level MOV. just about any will do.

Would you say the varistor was about 20mm in diameter?
if so something like this will do http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/ERZ-V20R221/P7323-ND/269436

That's it. Thanks for your help.
