Title: Area 51 - Replace hard drive with compact flash
Post by: lesoleil70 on April 04, 2014, 03:18:39 pm
Hi,

Just acquired an area 51 board, no hard drive, but otherwise in working order.

I'm looking to replace the hard drive method with the compact flash method.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of the hard drive image.

Thanks a lot

I may be wrong but doesn't the mame CHD kind of work?

You can buy the compact flash cards here: http://www.arcade-service.com/parts/flash-cards/

There is a tutorial how to do it with the "CHD" file in a mame rom here. http://mamedev.org/misc/cax2009.pdf

In fact here is a link to download the CHD file. http://www.emuparadise.me/M.A.M.E._-_Multiple_Arcade_Machine_Emulator_ROMs/Area_51_(R3000)/11143

Scroll down a bit, until you see "Download CHD for Area 51 (R3000)". That is the download link.

I did the CF Card method - works great. Area 51 is great fun.  I had a 2GB CF card in the house doing nothing, just enough for the job, the unit below cost £0.99 inc postage.

The hardest part was creating the bootable CF card using command line instructions, but it's not rocket science, just took due diligence. Great to see it fire up.

Yes sir!

2 x Happ ones

They're off now, I just hooked them up rough to test them out, and the board with the CF/IDE method.

That's a really cool mod if you ever have the need to replace a HDD, I've read that it's faster booting too - it was fast, but I can't compare myself not having owned the original HDD.  I followed the Tighe Lory video, hacked up a floppy drive power cable - basically if you watch that, I did it.

There was a silly cheap post on a UK forum for the guns, and the board was free as a last minute sweetener, I jumped at it.

They need some cleaning, but great fun.

I need to juggle all the shit around in the machines, I hooked this up to the PP2 to use the CRT monitor.

There is also an area 51/max force combo upgrade. I think mame has unencrypted roms that don't need the chip if you want to burn your own stuff. Don't quote me on that, though.

that looks pretty awesome. I think your two cabs are really cool. I have no shooting games and i'm regretting it!

Yeah I think you are right there, not that I've tried it, but I'm sure I read that too.

This hobby is very consuming.  I think I'm getting machine #4 and #5 this weekend. I can't say too much right now - eyes everywhere on these forums.

Great job!

The craziest part, and the bit I was kicking myself about after hours of head scratching.....

I was opening the CMD box , but not in administrator, and could not access \\.\PHYSICALDRIVEx    what a dumbass...

But in the process I learned a shit load more than I intended to about MAME and CHD files.
