Title: Molex connector kit
Post by: Epop on August 05, 2015, 11:51:12 am
Hey yall,

Working on putting together some kind of molex connector kit so I can have stuff to fix what ever comes up. Is there a good kit out there or what should I put on a kit I build my self?

I would love to put together a nice kit for this. I know what connectors come up a lot but what price would everyone be willing to spend? Connectors are not dirt cheap and cost in the ball part of 50 cents to a $1 or sometimes more per connector.

Typical connectors
0.93"
0.156" (3.96mm)
0.1"

Various pitch 2 and 3 pin AC plugs

5.03mm (amp Mate-n-lok)
6.35mm  (molex 42021)

There are lots of connectors. Even worse are the crimp pins and sockets. they are not interchangeably at all.

It depends what is in the kit. If you put molex and pins, say 3 of each set (male and female) with extra pins. Would be good. Not sure total cost.

Not sure either. Being kind of new to all this. What would a kit that cost $30 vs. a kit that cost $50 get me? Would it be enough stuff in the kit to get me through a couple of projects?

a good estimate would be to assume $0.75 per connector. That should net you somewhere around maybe 40 connectors and pins for the $30 kit. The key to make this kit work would be to find a common set of connectors, like no one is going to use a 5 pin connector. but a 4 pin will be common. 40 sounds like a lot but when you realize how many different style of connectors there are it becomes difficult to include say 2 mates per size/type. I am working on sourcing the the connectors for this kit in my free time this week so it might still be another 2-3 weeks before i have a kit ready.

Thanks Ian you the man!

Sounds good. What about a 3 connector like you use for power on a galaga power for jamma adapter?

thats a "universal mate-n-lok" connector. fairly common in 3 pin 4 pin 6pin i think 8pin and maybe up to 15 pin.

I usually bulk order a bunch of Molex and Amp connectors (and pins) from the Real Bob Roberts when I need to order other things.
http://www.therealbobroberts.net/conectas.html

Another supplier of these would be cool though.

Maybe a kit with more common sizes, as it was a pain for me to think of all possible numbers of connector types and matching pins, I just wanted to order a bunch that I might need in the future.  I think I ordered connectors with 2, 6, 9, 12, 15 pins (male and female).  I had some conversion cabs that I wanted to use the existing wiring, but use an adapter or new harness but use the existing connectors in the cab and needed to match them up.

I just finished adding all of the 0.156" connectors to my inventory managment system. It looks like it would be $40 for a kit of 4x each 0.156 connect from 2 pin to 14 pin with trifurcon pins and polarizing plugs.

I am not sure yet which connectors would be unused so this might be a kit that changes as time progresses.

If this sounds fair let me know or if I should change anything.

One possible idea to cut down on price point for people and give options as to what they want, would be to make two kits.  Smaller connectors like the 4 pin/8pin connectors and pins in one kit, and the bigger ones in another.  Perhaps keep a few of the large connector kits on hand and several of the small connector ones, I imagine they'd see more common use.  Make it to where one could buy either kit at a lower price point for fixing particular connectors or buy both kits (or even a larger single kit) to get most connectors you'd need in arcade repair.  Would be very nice to have such kits available.

Let me know when your kits is ready and where I can buy it. I am in. You know better than I about pins and what is used.

So at the moment i am still trying to go through some arcade manuals and find some common parts but so far the most common things that show up are

10 pin, 3pin 0.156" for monitor input
2 pin 0.062
3 pin 0.062
2 pin 0.084
3 pin 0.084
2 pin 0.093
3 pin 0.093
all of those are used on monitor AC input and Cabinet power input

outside of those super common connectors it comes down to 0.156" that is used like, everywhere. With every size kind of evenly used. I am not sure how to split up this connector kits but I am getting ready to start ordering the parts in to build them. Please if you can think of any connector you have run into a lot let me know
