Title: Asteroids Deluxe no voltages.
Post by: Jack on July 25, 2015, 02:56:00 pm
I have an Atari Asteroids Deluxe that I just picked up today, broken. I replaced the power transistor because it was bad, but it still won't work. I noticed the voltage selector and molex connector are missing on the power "brick". Does anyone know if this is normal?

The monitor and light kicks on, however there is no voltage to the board.

Update: Voltages at the test leads are 0.01-0.05 volts. I am thinking the big blue capacitor.

First check fuses.
Then check voltages on the power brick. Check the dc voltage between pin 1 and 5 of the 15 pin connector. (http://bitslicer.tripod.com/images/ar_images/brick6.gif)

Should be something above 9v dc

I doubt the big blue is bad. You won't be able to test that properly until you have a working game. However if you want to see if it's the problem just do a ac voltage test between pins 1 and 5 of the 25 pin connector and if it is more than maybe 3v ac then it might be bad.

0V between 1 and 5
Fuses are all good.

What is the ac voltage between 6 and 7

About 36

You need to get the power brick out of the cabinet to continue any more work on it. Either the diode bridge is broke somehow or a wire came loose. But there isn't anything more we can do with it in the cabinet.

I've removed it a few times already. All the wiring inside it is fine.

Have you checked the bridge? Does the bridge get AC?

I haven't. How exactly do I test the bridge rectifier?

The short answer is use the diode test on your multimeter and kind of probe between any two adjacent pins and you should have either 0.5v or OL. Test each pair both directions. You should have 4 0.5v results. And two 1.4v results.

The extra short answer. Have the thing flipped over and plug it in. Two pins will have AC voltage and two will have DC voltage.

One pair is about .8 volts one way and nothing the other
Other pair is nothing either way

You Have To Test Every combo of pairs.  They are all interconnected. I should also mention there is going to be a pair where itblocks in both directions.

It's still easier to test voltages when it's on.

All pairs look good except two. One does conduct either way and the other one gives .8 v one way instead of .4

That sounds good. Just finish that up with checking the voltages.  I don't remember if they label the pins or not. Either way here is all the common styles (http://www.electronics2000.co.uk/images/data/bridge.gif)

Should the 15 pin be hooked up or does it not matter?

Leave it off

About 1v on the ac side and nothing on dc

So that says something bad happened to the wiring.  Either the bridgewinding on the transformer is broke or something is miss wired.

Turn off the brick and measure the resistance between the ac pins of the bridge.  Should be something low. Like under 100 ohms. Probably under 10 ohms.

I think you should also investigate why the voltage selector is missing.  I'm assuming someone hacked in some wiring to get rid of the selector plug.

Just found a blown fuse. F3, 20a.
I could've sworn all the fuses were good.
Is the spare a 20a?

I don't remember off hand what thespare is.  But you can read the number on the fuse itself.  Also consider replacing f3 with a 25amp fuse

They don't say on the casing. Both look 35 years old and very similar inside. Old one just seperated. No burn marks.

Update: Just applied power with new fuse. Power brick made a snapping noise, however all fuses are still good.

Retest voltages.

Good and bad news. I plugged in the game and I couldn't believe it. IT WORKED! I played a few games, but then F3 blew. I hope I put something less then 20A in there, and that is why it blew.
When I got it, the power transistor on the power board was bad so I replaced it. Then the fuse blew (or just exasperated from handling) so the repair looked unsuccessful.
I had about 5.8V on the test loops on the audio/power board.

Try the 25 Amp fuse. If the 25 amp is still blowing, start suspecting the big blue to be shitty.

Fast or slow?
Also any recommendation of what store to get one at?

25A slow blow. Not sure where to buy it from. I'll probably stock some more fuses and get them on my site at some point.

I found some on Amazon. They should be here Tuesday.
While I was playing, I noticed the internal blue-light was burnt out. Anyone know where I can find a replacement?

How many volts go through F3? Assuming something around 10v

Yeah about that

My home depot has 25a fuses but they're only rated for 12v.

That sounds like an automotive fuse. The fuse for f3 is a 30v fuse

Okay. I believe they had 25A 32V fuses at the store, so I will have to go back and look.

Update: there's a 20a fuse in there and the game is working just fine. Been on for an hour now. Old fuse died quick because of age, probably.
