Title: beginner youtube friendly HD camera?
Post by: offset on May 27, 2015, 02:31:00 pm
Every now and then I work on games in the garage and maybe I havent found anything on youtube that covers it, so though about recording the fix.

What is a good entry level videocamera that does 1080p with enough storage for longer record times (ie. 30mins or more).

go pros are actually pretty decent for video, there are a ton of sub $200 cameras that are good enough.

Was looking at those, but dont think they have a viewfinder/display.   Is that a separate add-on?

After a bit of research, settled on this camcorder.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HLDFTRS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Supports external mic, 1080p60, optical zoom, removable storage, lower price point, and I think a tripod mount for a rolling tripod.

I think you made a good choice! Be sure to post links here once you upload some vids.

Hmmm, what is your goal with the camera?

Two fold, youtube camera for my daughter who likes to do makeup and misc videos.

Also, misc youtube video for myself to focus on some arcade repair (pcb work, cabinets, etc) of things that I might be fixing/working on that I havent seen on youtube yet.

I find myself doing the same thing.
Most of the time the videos speed right by the trouble/fix
but I guess that's good in a way because you will learn more with less help.

If you haven't already made the purchase or don't mind returning.  B&H has a sale on the next model up, The R50 (has 8GB internal mem) for $250.  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1023204-REG/canon_8gb_vixia_hf_r50.html

Overall either way you go, it sounds like a nice camcorder!

Bought this refurbished (hopefully it is like new, should be here any day now for me to confirm) for $179 on amazon.com.

I picked the r500 because I dont need some of the features of the other models (ie. control it via wifi, etc) and the r600 is basically the same.

I'll probably buy a bunch of 32GB SDHC cards for it as the price point is good.

Here is a good review on youtube

Got the camcorder in the mail today.

Looks brand new and works perfectly.

Was in original unopened Canon packaging that was labeled refurbished.

The refurbished label saved me $80.

I need to find out what Tripod John uses, I need one with wheels.

I also need to get a light kit.

Here is a very low light video using the camcorder of my Frogger.

Funny you mentioned the tripod, I was re-watching last years funspot video last night and John mentioned Dan Reed gave it to him.  'danreedphoto' is in the chat frequently, might want to ask if you see him there. Providing you don't get a response here in the meantime.  It looks similar to this in person.  http://www.ecvv.com/product/3918924.html

The wheels are not built into the tripod.

It's this:

Day footage using the camera while on a recent trip to the Bahamas, for a sub $200 camera, I'm very happy with it.

JOHN WISHES HE WAS IN THE BAHAMAS! Where did you stay? Was it expensive? I need to plan a vacation like now!

Cruise Ship stopped in Nassau Bahamas (I have a small budget, lol).  If budget isn't an issue, Atlantis is the way to go ( http://www.atlantisbahamas.com/ )

If you do visit Nassau though, go to this place, amazing blue water, if you have a family, the dolphin encounter is awesome.

One of the most beautiful places I have visited (and I've been to Cozumel, Jamaica, Key West, Florida, etc).

I saw your video in Puerto Rico, I want to go there in the future as well.
