Title: how difficult is it to repair black and white vector monitor?
Post by: EDD on May 05, 2015, 10:24:05 pm
Planning on buying a asteroid cab but the monitor doesn't work. I was wondering if they are difficult to repair?

They can be a pain to work on. The flyback is not available and the annode diode is inline with the annode wire. If the diode is bad or the wire is cracked then you have to do some nasty modifications to fix it.

The one problem that is a pain to deal with is the fact that the monitor reports 'spot killer' for just about any failure ever. Its possible the game PCB is bad and the monitor is fine but that can be difficult to check without the proper equipment.

They are pretty basic monitors. Not a lot of parts. And, they are well documented.

Mine blew up in my Asteroids and I fixed it no problem.

As Ian said, sometimes PCB issues look like monitor issues but you can usually deduce which is which.

So long as it doesn't have a dead or weak CRT you can get it running again

it took me two days to get a dead asteroids running again.
I traded a working arII for a working ar1 power board ,  Had mrbill  rebuild me an asteroids board for 150.
Reflowed the boards in the monitor.

thing turned right on.
