Post by: VertexGuy on March 12, 2015, 08:45:04 pm Drop it in a 750 degree heat treating oven, burn everything off , then take it out to cool so you can sandblast the residue off.

the old overlay then I use citri strip to remove the glue. I lightly sand when done. Looks like a new panel! Title: Re: Changing a cpo ( what is the best Cleaner ???) Post by: John's Arcade on March 12, 2015, 10:11:37 pm I have become a believer in foam stripper in a can. The strong stuff. Used it a few times last year and loved the results. It was messy but it went quick.
I also heard aircraft stripper is the best ever. I'm doing that next. Title: Re: Changing a cpo ( what is the best Cleaner ???) Post by: VertexGuy on March 12, 2015, 10:20:23 pm I am doing a centipede CP tonight.
Ill try and film it. Title: Re: Changing a cpo ( what is the best Cleaner ???) Post by: xcaliber on March 14, 2015, 10:32:13 am I think I have seen John clear coat a control panel. If not, has anyone ever clear coated one?

I really like this concept! I worry about getting a thick enough coat on it and scared I would get brush or roller marks. Title: Re: Changing a cpo ( what is the best Cleaner ???) Post by: VertexGuy on March 14, 2015, 07:52:31 pm I never even have to touch the control panel with bare hands .
i lower it in the oven and it burns the old overlay and adhesive right off. 5 mins, i sit and drink a soda then take it out and bring it over to a sandblasting booth. I wear latex gloves, touching raw steel with bare hands is a bad idea. After its all clean and shiney, i wrap the cp in industrial paper towels and bring it home. I have a can of self etching primer i hit it with after, this primer burns itself into the steel. You put your fingers all over bare steel and paint over it , its bound to rust. granted you need a heat treating plant nearby , but it beats burning the crap outta your fingers with a heat gun and playing with paper towels and stripper. I usually wait until i have a few CP's and coindoors to do then i go. Try this (for those who don't know) Take a stripped to bare metal control panel.. put a few finger prints on it.. place a sticker over the fingerprints. wait a week.. take the sticker off. you get a surprise rusty fingerprint. even if you paint over it first. even if you clean it after you touch it . Last time I used an aircraft stripper (on an aircraft) a fresh air suit was required. Be warned, aircraft chemicals are awesome but they will damage you. |
