Title: Gyruss PCB question
Post by: jessiewonka on January 18, 2015, 09:17:37 pm
I'm curious how to tell a legit vs boot Gyruss PCB -- this is for my own curiosity, and to understand if there are any differences between the two.

Here's what I have:

Bonus question: what's a reliable non-abrasive to remove heavy duty stickers like this:

I have never seen a bootleg pcb with a company logo and therefore i would say if your pcb has a Konami logo it is legit. Another good indicator for a bootlog are areas or daughter boards with off-the-shelf ICs that are often used to replace custom chips. Here is a pic my Gyruss bootleg pcb and you can clearly tell the differences:

Agreed, this one doesn't have the oddities I've seen on some Neo Geo boot carts for instance.  But the Ozborn high score save FAQ gave me the impression some of my socketed chips were generally only seen in boots.  Plus a lot of my chips have been scratched out, wasn't sure what that meant.

I forgot about your bonus question: Did you try a blow dryer yet?

The only way to tell the difference is to find pictures online of known legit boardsets and compare with what you have. With the case of konami games, you can also look up if they use custom branded processors and run often times encrypted code. Not all games of course but a little research goes a long ways.

Yeah, there seems to be some varieties out there, as many of pics I came across were different than mine.
