Title: The Donkey Kong Cocktail I picked up...Will it work?
Post by: mrdude on July 02, 2014, 08:36:47 pm
So I recently purchased a non-working Ms. Pac-man from a guy and have had some luck getting it working. It still needs some work but I think I know what I need to do. Anyway, the same guy also had a non-working DK cocktail table that I went back and got. My worst case scenario is that I can part it out if I have to and recoup the cost that way. Personally, I'd love to get this running knowing that I'm not going to ever drop the cash to pick up a working DK upright. And...believe it or not, I actually LIKE cocktail tables. This one is destined to be our coffee table in our TV area of the basement.

Here is what I think I know:
- I could have sworn I saw the monitor power up in the guy's garage, but now when I get it home, nothing is visible

- AC power is coming through as the cooling fan underneath the PCBs is running in either outlet

- I *think* I can hear static coming from the monitor, but I don't see any neck glow.

- I checked the 1 fuse on part of the power supply and it is fine (which makes sense since the fan has power)

- I tried seeing if it would play blind, but I didn't hear anything.

- While adjusting the volume I heard static/popping

- Adjusting the brightness on the monitor yielded nothing

My next steps are to clean the board...it is FILTHY! The dust that has accumulated from the cooling fan is 30+ years thick. After that I'm going to reconnect it and see if anything happens, which I doubt. After that, what should my next steps be?

(Thank you in advance, I am relatively new to this hobby and appreciate the advice and resources you all offer!)

I think you are going to have a tough time on this one. Do you know anyone with a nintendo cab that you could test the board in? There is a chance that your board is dead and those things are kind of a pain to fix.

Don't let Ian discourage you! :)

First things first. Make sure you have power. Power to the monitor, power to the board. Do you have a multimeter?

That's a four board DK board. People work on them. Dick Millikan can fix those. They also can be found on ebay or KLOV. Not that uncommon.

yeah dont let me discourage you! I still stand by what i said, you should try to get those boards tested and work on that monitor!

I have a cheap multimeter. I think it's time to invest in a better one. There is AC power going out, the question is does it make it to the monitor?

The closest person I know with a Nintendo cab is John! But would it even work in an upright? They didn't change the wiring for it did they?

4-board stack has different wiring. Oh, Tim. Ha.

John is right, don't let Ian discourage you!  I have a DK cabaret that also had the 4 board stack and didn't work.  I got it working.  Also, I have a DK upright and a Junior upright and they have 2 board stacks in them and they both have the individual connectors in them and not the edge connector, so you might be able to test your board in that upright.  If not some people sell adapters, I have one.

I picked up a SI cocktail that had a Big Kong conversion in it. The cabinet had obviously been in a fire, and didn't work, but I got it working after washing the soot off the board and replacing a missing cap.

Progress of me working it through and getting the game working:

Here is the harness adapter too:

Here you can see my upright with a 2 board stack yet the harness is one that is compatible with a 4 board stack:

And my Junior with the older style harness as well:

The only difference between four and two board harnesses is an extra power cable for the audio board if I remember correctly.

I am a big fan of cocktails as they were quite popular in restaurants when I was a kid in 1980.  I remember playing an asteroids cocktail many times at my favorite pizza joint.

Clearly they weren't thinking things through then! Good to know though...I had a feeling it was different, but was hoping that it wasn't.  Maybe I'll get a chance to clean that board tomorrow while the baby naps as it rains on the 4th of July. Or do one of the other projects going at the moment.

Tighe, that is one DIRTY board...holy cow...  I'll take a look at those videos, thanks!

Try recapping the montior too. Weather is a sharp or a sanryo it has an onboard audio amp so your board could be fine but you could be getting crackle/hum because of the bad caps on that.(says the guy who can troubleshoot but hasn't fixed anything)

Yeah your best bet is to bring the whole machine over to somebodies house near you that has a spare G07 , power supply and a way to test the board.
then you can rule out wtf is wrong in one hour flat.

I would get that monitor working. nintendo monitors are kind of a pain to work on because you have to take the whole monitor out and you cant use a standard isolation transformer. None the less I would do your best to check it over

Here is a pretty solid flow chart and what i started to type up before i found this
http://home.comcast.net/~mtpacifico/_KLOV/Sanyo%2020EZV%20Flow%20Chart.pdf

This works for the sharps as well as there isn't too much different between the two.

Once you are able to get a solid screen of white with the 'screen' turned up I would move onto the game board.
It is probably in your best interest to do a cap kit fairly soon on that monitor.

Tighe I have a working SI cocktail boardset if you need one.

Current update as of this morning:

It plays blind. I get varying voltage readings on the board. Usually less than 5v. One spot close to a connector I checked had 5v. The audio has to be cranked all the way up and it is not very loud and with some distortions. Is this a low power issue?

I have a feeling I may end up with more cocktails just so I can fit a billiards table in easily...the cue stick will go right over the top!

Anyway, checked the AC voltage coming in: 107.5 V on average. That seems like it should be good, right? As it should be about 100?

that's not the only voltage you should be checking.
If that was my machine id be hunting a 2nd power supply first , a known working one.
Then id be looking at that monitor real hard. And I also wonder,  something is not making a connection right.

Hey no worries! I'd love the help sometime. I've got a few projects going on at the same time. Cabinet work on my Final Lap, a cap kit to do on the Ms. Pac, and then this. It's like, "What game do I want to play...err...work on?"

Thanks for the comment on the YouTube as well. I'm going to print out the wiring schematics I downloaded as well as the power supply troubleshooting guide to see if I can make heads or tails of it.  I did pull out the monitor last night and just re-seat all of the connections that I could see and the neck board. I still got nothing.

I'd love a red tent! Especially being a Nintendo fanboy. The Ms. Pac is my wife's contribution to the basement arcade!
